Around 10,000 Olle walkers take part each year, with growing numbers of visitors from China, Taiwan, Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada.
A trail-side performance is the pause I’d save room for.
The Jeju Olle Walking Festival turns three days of walking into a moving festival along the Jeju Olle trails. The route brings together cultural performances, village activities, traditional games and food made with local produce. Trail walking or stopping for a show: which one sets your pace? I’d leave room for both, since performances are part of what walkers encounter along the way 👀
Music sometimes has the sound of waves behind it, while traditional Jeju performances may use a festival field as their backdrop. If you make time for only one thing, pick a trail-side performance: its setting shifts with the landscape. That blend of walking and culture is the festival’s particular pleasure.
Traditional games are one of the festival’s main programmes. A game stop or a steady stretch of walking: which would you rather break for? Choose the games if you want to add a participatory experience to your route 🤭
The festival’s cultural programme unfolds along the walk, so leave some flexibility in your pace rather than hurrying past every stop. Traditional play sits alongside performances and the Clean Sea Road Campaign as one of the named main programmes.
The Clean Sea Road Campaign is another of the main programmes, with a name that points to keeping the sea path clean. A performance break or a campaign with a coastal focus: which kind of stop appeals more? Look for the campaign if you want your festival experience to include that clean-path theme 🙂
It is listed alongside the walking festival’s performances and traditional games, giving you another distinct programme to look out for. Keep your pace open as you walk, so you have room for the activities that catch your attention.
The supporting activities include Olle calisthenics, Jeju Olle OX Quiz, QR Stamp Tour and Kkodak Kkodak Meotnaegi. Olle calisthenics or the OX quiz: which name draws you in first? Pick the format that sounds most enjoyable to you; each is listed as a separate supporting activity 👌
The festival runs annually over three days, and its listed venue, Jocheon Manse Dongsan, is a memorial park at the end of Olle Route 18 and the start of Route 19. Admission is paid, with reduced rates for groups of twenty or more, disabled visitors, national merit recipients and eligible youth. Check which reduced rate applies to you before setting out.
