About this place
266 years without a Main Tower!? I did a double take the first time I looked into it 😳 Start in Osaka Castle Park and look up at the castle from the grounds first.
Toyotomi Hideyoshi started construction in 1583 on the Ishiyama Hongan-ji Site, and the Main Tower was finished two years later. In 1615, the Toyotomi clan fell during the Osaka Natsu no Jin (Summer Campaign of Osaka), and the Main Tower burned too ⚡ The castle has carried that turning point of an era with it ever since.
Inside the Main Tower, all eight floors hold exhibits, including folding screen paintings, roof ornament replicas, and scale models of the castle town in the 16th century 🤩
Add Nishinomaru Garden and the ginkgo avenues, and an autumn day could get much richer 🍂 Come in autumn and take in both the Main Tower museum and the autumn leaves.
Eight floors of exhibits
The Main Tower stands 55 meters above ground, with five stories and eight floors. Many of the exhibits cover Toyotomi Hideyoshi's achievements. On the 7th floor, a wall monitor shows key scenes from his life in hologram video and images, so don't miss it 🧐 Gold leaf decorations adorn the tower too, so can you spot them?
Rebuilt after the fire
The Main Tower was rebuilt in the Tokugawa period, but a lightning strike in 1665 burned it again. The current Main Tower went up in 1931, 266 years after the fire, built with citizen donations that answered a call from then-mayor Seki. That's a pretty passionate story 🙌
Garden and autumn leaves
Nishinomaru Garden is a traditional Japanese garden covering 66,000 square meters. A ginkgo-lined avenue runs more than 1 km along the outer edge of Osaka Castle Park, and the central area has two autumn leaf spots 🌿 From the garden, you can see the castle through a cluster of autumn leaves.
What to know first
Hours are 9:00–18:00 every day. One of the entrances is Tamatsukuri-guchi, and there's also an entrance you can use by wheelchair, so it's worth checking before you go in. Admission to Nishinomaru Garden is 350 yen, so don't forget your wallet if you plan to stroll the garden too 😉
