A torii gate—the gateway that marks a shrine entrance—faces northeast at Hokkaido Jingu, a direction said to protect the Sakhalin and Kuril Islands area! 😲 Check its orientation before following the approach, and you’ll get a glimpse of the shrine’s ties to Hokkaido’s development. Founded in 1869, it was called Sapporo Jinja until 1964.
The shrine enshrines Kaitaku Sanshin—Okunitamano-kami, Onamuchino-kami, and Sukunahikonano-kami—along with Emperor Meiji, making four deities in all. Onamuchino-kami is also another name for Okuninushi-no-Mikoto. Within the grounds, Kaitaku Jinja enshrines 37 people who contributed to Hokkaido’s development; Korei Jinja and Hotaki Jinja are there too. 🏮
A path bordered by tall trees leads into the grounds, and Hokkaido Jingu sits next to Maruyama Park. Its annual festival is held on June 15, a date that has become established as Sapporo Festival day. 🎐 Maruyama-Koen Station is a 15-minute walk away, while the Jingu-mae bus stop is a 1-minute walk. The shrine is open from 06:00, so you can pair a visit with time at Maruyama Park.
