A place story by Momo
About this place
Japan’s first electric clock hangs on a tower in Odori Park—did you know? Sapporo TV Tower stands 147.2 meters tall, with its observation deck about 90.38 meters above ground. From up there, you can take in Sapporo’s cityscape and Odori Park’s green corridor stretching east to west 🌳
The tower was built to transmit television signals. After NHK Sapporo and other broadcasters began transmitting, the transmitting stations moved to Mt. Teine, and the tower’s broadcasting role ended by 2021. These days, the view is the reason to head up 🏙️
And don’t forget to look below the deck: the electric clock was installed in 1961, renovated in 1998 and 2006, and now uses light-emitting diodes. Give it a glance as you look up at the tower!
The view at 90.38m
The observation deck looks out over Sapporo and Odori Park’s east-to-west green corridor. It sits about 90.38 meters above ground in a tower that’s 147.2 meters tall. Enjoy the city view, then take in the park’s stretch of green 📷
Japan’s first electric clock
Below the observation deck is Japan’s first electric clock, installed in 1961. It was renovated in 1998 and 2006, and now uses light-emitting diodes. When you look up at the tower, keep an eye out for the clock, too ✨
From broadcast tower to lookout
Built as a broadcast tower at a total cost of 170 million yen, Sapporo TV Tower was completed in 1957, and its observation deck opened on August 24 that year. TV transmission later moved to Mt. Teine, and the tower’s broadcasting role ended by 2021. Take in the view with that change in the tower’s story in mind 📺
