Now in its ninth edition, the nationwide programme connects hanbok experiences across more than 410 locations. A commemorative show, an academic symposium, a book festival and a hands-on campaign each offer a different way in.
A runway, a symposium or a festival: which way do you want to meet hanbok?
The National Museum of Korea’s Open Yard hosts the commemorative Hanbok Culture Week event, with a performance and a hanbok fashion show on the programme. One is made to be heard, the other to be watched: which will catch your eye first? 👀
The venue is an open space at the National Museum of Korea, a major museum for cultural artifacts and artworks. Its scale makes it easy to pair the event with a look around the museum, so leave room in your plans for both. Admission to Hanbok Culture Week is listed as free, and public transit reaches the museum.
At Gangneung Cultural Center, the Hanbok Life UNESCO Academic Symposium brings together lectures and a discussion session. The format shifts the focus from how hanbok looks to how hanbok life can be considered and discussed. If you like hearing different perspectives meet, this is the programme to put on your list 🤭
Set aside time for the talks and discussion rather than treating this as a quick stop. The symposium is one distinct programme within the wider week, so check its own arrangements before you go.
The Book Festival X Hanbok Culture Week brings a festival to the area around the music plaza at Seoul Arts Center. Its title puts books and hanbok side by side, giving this programme a different feel from a runway or a lecture. Would you rather browse a festival setting or settle in for a symposium? Your choice points to the kind of experience you want ☺️
This festival runs for three sessions, so check which one fits your plans before setting out. The programme is held at the plaza area, making its location part of the visit; confirm the festival’s own details as you plan.
At the central lawn inside Open Songhyeon Green Plaza, the Chuseok Hanbok-Wearing Campaign pairs hanbok experiences with traditional games. It invites you to take part as well as look, a hands-on change of pace from the fashion show and symposium 👌
The campaign is a separate programme from the main week, so check its arrangements independently before you go. If trying hanbok sounds more appealing than watching a show, this is the one to choose. Pick a programme, then make a plan around its venue.
